Mastering the transition from one hand to two.
For many preschoolers, counting up to 5 is intuitive. The challenge begins when they run out of fingers on one hand. This counting on fingers worksheets set is specifically designed to help students visualize numbers 6 through 10 as “5 plus more.”
Why This Layout Works for Teachers? We designed this worksheet to reinforce the “Base 5” structure:
- Visualizing Groups: For the number 7, the student sees one full open hand (5) and two fingers on the other hand (2). This is the earliest form of kindergarten addition to 5 expansion.
- Subitizing Skills: Instead of counting 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 every time, the child learns to instantly recognize “One Full Hand + Two Fingers” as 7.
- Preparation for Base-10: Using both hands lays the groundwork for understanding tens and ones, which is essential for first-grade math.
Activity Tip: Ask students to “High Five” the paper for the full hand (5) and then count the remaining fingers on the second hand.
