Free Simple Picture Subtraction Worksheets (1-5)
Starting math can be scary for little ones, but it doesn’t have to be! Our simple picture subtraction worksheets are designed specifically for absolute beginners (Preschool).
Unlike standard worksheets that go up to 10 or 20, this collection focuses strictly on numbers 1-5. This ensures students master the concept of “taking away” without getting overwhelmed by large numbers.
Why Start with Numbers 1-5?
Building confidence is key. When a child can look at a group of 3 apples, cross out 1, and easily count the 2 remaining, they feel successful.
- Low Pressure: Counting to 5 is second nature to most preschoolers.
- Visual Clarity: Fewer objects mean less clutter on the page.
- Foundation: Mastering 1-5 is the requirement before moving to picture subtraction within 10.

Why are there only 5 items max?
These worksheets are “entry-level.” Restricting the number range to 1-5 allows children to focus purely on the process of subtraction rather than the difficulty of counting large groups.
How do I teach this?
Read the equation together (e.g., “5 take away 2”). Ask your child to point to the 5 items, then draw an X over 2 of them. Count what is left together!
