Moving Up: 2-Digit Addition Worksheets

Welcome to the world of tens and ones! Double Digit Addition is a major milestone in elementary math. It is the moment when students stop seeing numbers just as simple counts and start understanding Place Value. Our worksheets are carefully designed with clear grids to help students keep their columns straight—a common struggle at this stage.

Level 1: Addition Without Regrouping

We recommend starting here. These worksheets involve adding numbers where the sum of the ones column is 9 or less (e.g., 23 + 45). There is no "carrying" involved.

Goal: Help students get comfortable writing answers directly under the correct column (Tens under Tens, Ones under Ones).

Level 2: Addition With Regrouping (Carrying)

This is where the real challenge begins. What happens when 8 + 4 equals 12? You can't fit "12" in the ones spot! Our Regrouping Worksheets guide students through the process of writing the ones digit and "carrying" the ten to the top of the next column.

Teacher's Tip: Many of our worksheets include "boxes" above the tens column. These little squares give students a designated place to write the carried number, reducing errors and messy work.

Why is Column Alignment So Important?

The biggest mistake students make with double-digit addition isn't the math itself—it's sloppy writing. If a student writes a 'ones' answer in the 'tens' column, the whole answer becomes wrong. Our printable PDFs focus on spacious layouts to encourage neatness and accuracy.
