The Logic of Scales: Down implies Heavy Visual estimation is useful, but the balance scale is the true mathematical tool for measuring weight. Our Balance Scale Worksheet introduces students to the physics of measurement: heavier objects pull the scale down due to gravity.
Reading the Diagram This activity moves from “feeling” weight to “reading” data.
- The Rule: The side that is DOWN holds the heavy object. The side that is UP holds the light object.
- The Task: Students look at tilted scales holding different items (like an Apple vs. a Pumpkin) and circle the one that is heavier based on the scale’s position.
Why Black and White? To keep the diagrams crisp and easy to read, we use a clean black and white format. This prevents confusion and allows students to color the “winning” (heavy) side if they wish.
